[ Because he thought it was a date and he's really glad he caught on to the fact it's not. How utterly embarrassing? He was all worked up about it, too, and kept using the word like an idiot. At least Katsuki didn't get mad about it and just pointed it out in a really calm way so Izuku could fix it without anything blowing up. He's...going to pretend he didn't say anything they were just talking about, because that's a little mortifying in immediate retrospect.

He's still happy about the outing, but it's something more nostalgic and childish in shape now. Katsuki didn't really argue about them being friends, and that's way more of a win than the other thing would have been.

It feels like a victory, anyway, and he wouldn't trade that for anything. Maybe they can even hit the arcade after or something? They haven't done that since coming here either, and not since they were kids...

There's a lot of things he wants to do. There's another bubbly grin. ]

Next time let's make sure everyone comes! We could even do teams that way. You could be captain of one!

[Granted escape rooms are better when there are more people, but point aside! This is a date; Katsuki simply doesn't want to call it that! Because "date" mean something and he's still internally flustered over actually considering something like that. He said it was a "friend date" and Katsuki holds to the original idea that they wanted to get some time alone together to do something fun, different, outside the house. Only don't expect him to call this a "date" date cause... cause... hmph. Anyways.

Maybe another time, later on, after a few more, he might be willing to make that obvious distinction. Just feels weird to be dating someone in a place that encourages people to screw each other without regard to personal bonds or feelings. Is that a healthy place to date? Can you date in a place like that? He doesn't know! He never dated before!

At least it didn't turn into an argument or blow up or something awkward like it normal risks doing. Katsuki steps off the raised section when it comes to an end and after the light, crosses the street with Izuku.]

Yes. And, um, that's just the point of dates, Kacchan. We don't have to worry about it with us, we're just friends. This is more like team building with less of a team.

[ At least not now that Izuku's fully up to date on things. He doesn't mind smothering a crush and keeping it to himself in the least, and he's currently more thrilled by Katsuki thinking about it for a group activity. Maybe they could even do regular outings? It could be a fun thing for everyone, and Izuku kind of misses that part of home and 1A. He never got to go to class events in middle school, so the class events in high school were basically amazing to a one.

The way he says "friends" sounds way too delighted despite the minor heartbreak of realizing he way overestimated his own appeal. He hasn't gotten to really say that without an argument from Katsuki's side since they were maybe four. ]

Jiro-san and I went to karaoke for her birthday, actually, and I'm almost sure she'd love this kind of thing too. Or, well, she might at least agree to it?

[For some reason he feels like the "we're just friends" comment is some sort of unconscious jab. But he's not sure what it is he's arguing about either. Is this a date? Yes. It's a friend date. A date to go on... as... shit... friends. BUT IT'S STILL NOT OPEN TO OTHER PEOPLE! He wants to go out with Izuku ALONE!

There's a difference between going on a date with one person and scheduling a group outing. Maybe that's where he's getting defensive. Thinking Izuku's going to assume any future plans for them to go out to dinner together or do some activity together is instantly a secret code for "get the gang together" or some crap. Or he's actually more nerved up about doing this date thing in the first place than he's willing to admit so now some of his own internal flustrations are peeking at the surface.

Did he fuck something up already? He doesn't know. God fucking dammit! New rule in the future: neither of them are allowed to talk until the date's over! Will that work? He feels like he wants to grab what slipped and yank it back to how it was. But what the fuck's he supposed to say to get that to happen?]

[And Katsuki's not stupid enough to think both of their remaining classmates here would really enjoy getting together with them. Hell, if circumstances happened, they'd probably move in with them. Shinsou's got an open invite and Katsuki'd probably not be able to ultimately turn Jirou away thanks to Izuku.]

Maybe... if the puzzles were sound-based. Might as well pull Jiiangshi in too if we're gonna make a group of the next one.

Mm, I was including both of them in that. [ He doesn't comment on the other part, unsure how to take it beyond "Katsuki doesn't really like group things". It's not like it's a comment about just Izuku specifically - it's probably more along the lines of "one person at a time hangout limit unless I say so".

Izuku no longer thinks they're on a date, Katsuki does, but it's probably for the best; he doesn't look remotely nervous any longer, and isn't trying to touch Katsuki, so there's definite upsides to him mentally reorganizing what they're doing. ]

Besides, four people is good for two teams. I could probably pair up with Jiro-san, if you'd prefer to be with Shinsou-kun.

[GAH!! HE'S SO FUCKING CONFUSED!! Katsuki doesn't know which "that" Izuku referred to about including "them" in now and he's not even sure what he's talked the other boy out of. On the plus side, Deku's not as nervous and he's not clinging to him, so that's... something. Wait, does that mean "date" is synonymous with "cling to Katsuki" in his head? If it's a date, he's good to PDA without risk? WTF?! WHAT HAPPENED HERE?!

He can't even respond to the first part and has to drop it entirely because there's nothing but a fucking wreck back there. Fine. For now, they can do this as an outing between the two of them and both of them can call it a "date" in their heads with whatever definition that word brings.

Granted, it's been a long ass time since the two boys went out by themselves to do something together for any fucking reason, so... maybe it's best to take it one step at a time. This is a conscious decision to go out together, with no event pressuring them, so that's a first. Right?]

Working in a team of four doesn't mean splitting into two teams of two, Deku. You have to know all of your teammates and utilize their strengths to the team's advantage. All four people have to be able to move interchangeably in the group.

[ If it helps, all Katsuki talked Izuku out of was the tentative idiocy of thinking anyone actually was interested in going on a date with him. He's kind of thinking Katsuki brought up classmates who might actually want to go out with him as contrast of "as opposed to me" and he's probably going to feel worse about that later when he's alone and the sheer joy of being out with a friend wears off.

He got dressed up for a first date he wasn't actually having, but Katsuki isn't making a big deal about it and thankfully is going along with pretending Izuku didn't badly misjudge what they agreed to, so it's easy to smile because that's a kindness he didn't expect.

He thinks it's nice that Katsuki's being kind about it and he's grateful for that. He probably deserved a little bit less nice. ]

I'm really fine with anything. It's just...nice to have people to hang out with.

[Considering Jirou had been on his team during the joint training, she should already know how Katsuki operates. And Izuku... well Izuku knows Katsuki well enough, but it's not like they've ever been on cooperative teams before, much less on cooperative terms, due to Katsuki's unwillingness. A few emergency examples forced to exist despite his humiliation and rage over having to accept it. But all that's for another time.

And no, that doesn't help. Then again, Katsuki's been conscious and unconsciously hammering away at Izuku's self esteem forever, so why not have another bout of it here? The real reason he brought up their classmates' prospective dating of Izuku is because... well... because he knows this is all going to go away when they return home. These feelings, their relationship, the improvements and changes and those deeper feelings he wants to deny. They'll be gone, reset back to the moment they left. Dating Izuku won't... even be a thing in his mind. Perhaps he wanted to somehow give that tiny bit of concern some solace that there might be someone waiting to make Izuku feel valuable in the "date" way back home.

But the road to hell is paved with good intentions. It'd been a selfish question as well; maybe he's getting what he deserves for even popping it. Never has been good with emotional talk.

Whether he really considers this a true "date" or not is something he's trying to wrestle with. Because in his mind, "dating" means romance. And... he's barely moving back into thinking of Izuku as a friend. Jumping from ten years of animosity to a year where bitter enemy turned to rivals to friend-in-denial to friend... that's a very large hurdle to consider. What he does know is that he wants this time alone with Izuku. He wants to go out with him to do something with him alone. That, at least, is... something.

[ It's not something to worry about now, anyway. Izuku asked, haltingly, for a date because Katsuki said he could, but...it's easy for him to believe he misunderstood, and that Katsuki is only trying to get along with him in the way he actually wanted to start with: rebuilding that friendship of theirs.

Izuku's okay to be friends with (!) and okay to fuck, but he's not up to scratch for dating (probably Katsuki would only actually like someone way more attractive and stronger, with several other classmates higher in the running even without being around, if he even liked a classmate), and he feels guilty for considering it at all a possibility. He's the only one prone to getting attached, and he has to work on getting less attached in the dangerous way and focus on the positive bonds he wants even more.

He won't push Katsuki anywhere near that hurdle again on his own, which makes things a lot simpler in some ways and more difficult in others that he has to figure out later.

Izuku just smiles again, sort of a little embarrassed about the comment. ]

Not really. I get along with people, but that isn't really popularity.

[He has to tell himself that a few times to finally force himself to get over the issue. Even if things kind of stumbled, at the vert least, they can still have an afternoon together. Escape room and dinner and whatever else they might do afterwards. Arcade, maybe even go to the bar.

Izuku did ask for a date and he has a date; it's just not the kind he thought it was. And that's okay. They have time to grow and develop whatever this is between them. Nothing wrong with repairing friendship first... It'd be stupid to date someone you weren't friends with, right?

As for who and what Katsuki likes... that's Katsuki's business and Deku shouldn't be assuming that kind of shit about him. Because as far as that coin goes, no one would look at Izuku and think Katsuki would be his ideal partner. (So long as they weren't in the know about their history or Izuku's obvious desire for connection with the blonde.) Personality-wise, they clash a lot.

There's a small part of Katsuki that wonders if Izuku's interest in him is honestly an interest or if it's an intense leftover, perhaps even a conditioned response, to long for the boy who left him behind in friendship so long ago. After spending all that time wanting to be close to him, wanting him back... is it possible for him to even look at someone else? And does Deku even realize it could be that? Who knows.

Something he'll think about on his own and deal with as shit arrives. They'll come to this hurdle again, especially since Katsuki's a little more open towards making first moves now.]

Katsuki passes over the pay after Izuku and then follows him onto the bus. Well, only a few minutes in and the proverbial boat's rocked. Not overturned like it has in the past, but definitely shaky.

No, it didn't really seem like something mom would enjoy and there were minimum group requirements of two people at the ones I heard about.

[ He's sure his mother would have gone to any of the various activities he didn't engage in during middle school if he'd asked, but that would have just made her sad to have to be asked...so he didn't. ]

[That makes sense. Katsuki props his foot up against the back of the seat in front of him like a true delinquent and slouches a little cause he feels like it. Not cause there's some guilty regret plaguing him over the shit life his actions gave Izuku back home.]
