I-um, I kind of figured you just ended up not doing reservations and were deciding last minute?

I made reservations at both of them until you picked one.

[He keys in the number of the one. If Izuku wants to get sushi, he'd better chime in now or forever hold his tongue about it.

[ He definitely isn't going to tell Katsuki to change things unless Katsuki expresses a preference? ]

I liked them both. That's why they're the last choices.

[Beat out the twenty others he put time and investigation into. Both of them had katsudon, so it makes no difference to which one they go.]

Well...whichever one has the meal you're most excited about is where I want to go.

[ He does not know about the katsudon and doesn't even think to ask. ]

(Honestly, this is kinda amusing, watching him struggle to make a decision based on his own preferences and practically being unable to. Like watching two opposite magnets trying to push together.)

[ Honestly, Izuku feels like he's being tested. Like if he says the wrong thing, Katsuki's going to ditch him or scoff or say something less than kind. It stresses him out, because he doesn't want to get it wrong, but...

He almost always does.

There's a right answer and he doesn't know it. Kastuki will never tell him what it is. ]

I, um, what if we go somewhere else? There's that cafe you really liked, it's never so busy it needs reservations. Or - or, we'll, I'm not actually really that hungry, so we could just go home, and you could have something there? I don't actually need to eat, we had that takoyaki earlier. I could make you something instead if you don't want to cook. I think I might prefer that? I mean, if you don't mind that it could be good.

[Is this what a robber trapped in the corner looks like? Back and forth, back and forth, freaking out because there's no option to escape when there's a fucking door right there beside him. Katsuki watches Izuku with a mixture of... a lot of things. This is exasperating and pathetic. The guy's having a fucking psychotic breakdown all because someone asked him which restaurant he wanted to eat at.]

Look at yourself.

[Katsuki's voice isn't cruel or harsh, but it is firm and maybe even concerned.]

[He lowers the phone, brows furrowed and eyes watching the other boy.]

You do everything possible to deny your own preference. Why the hell are you so scared to have a choice in something?

[ There's an answer, but he doesn't exactly want to give it. Izuku looks away. ]

[There's an answer and Katsuki steps forward, closing the distance and leaning in so he can hear that mumbled response.]

[In the end, that's what it all comes down to. After everything, Izuku still idolizes him and fears him simultaneously.]

You used to ask me things and - didn't react well when I chose.

[ Even right now, he's waiting for the backlash. ]

This just - feels like another test you rigged, even if it's...even if you don't mean it to be. I don't...I don't have a preference here and I can't tell if you do and I didn't expect to choose the meal because you said you'd handle it.

I did handle it. Eliminated all the other options but two.

[Katsuki frowns at him again.]

When you picked the escape room, you still came to me and talked about what difficulty we should do, how many rounds we should do, separate or together, all that shit. You didn't decide everything all by your-fucking-self.

[Or did he forget that? The unspoken semi-sarcastic question. Katsuki blows out his breath and rubs the side of his head.]

You know you still have to order when you get there. I didn't pick your meal for you.

[ ...he's already doubting himself. Izuku tries to course correct. Katsuki focused on the part that matters and bringing up the past when they don't talk about it for a reason does no one any good; it's not relevant to Katsuki, and Izuku shouldn't mention it again.

He's...going to move on from it, trying to swallow it down and fix things. ]

I'm sorry. This is on me. You did everything right. The...the second one is fine.

[And as normal, that only irritates Katsuki further. When he has the option to bring something up and the blonde dismisses it, instead of fighting back on it, Izuku wilts again and crumbles. Sometimes, he wonders how the other boy even managed to fight against him back in U.A. the times they did.

The 'sorry' would've been eye-rolling-ly acceptable, but the sudden garrulous offering nettles him.

Katsuki watches him for a few more seconds.]

I insulted your mom and you got mad enough to hang the fuck up on me.
Why don't you care about yourself enough to do the same for you?

Because the only outcome I actually want here is for you to have a good time.

[ It's different from situations where he actually wants something really specific. Or, well... ]

The only things I did have a preference for are things I wouldn't want to force after you said no because it would just...ruin them.

[ And he's been anxious about that part, and Katsuki was just giving him that blank stare that's straight out of some of his worst memories. ]

I don't...want to get rejected again.
