likemybooks: Taryon staring at a smiling Vex (Vex - Stare)
From: [personal profile] likemybooks
No, I didn't...I didn't wake up with it. [He needed a moment to confirm that, according to LILITH records, he had purchased the book series from home. It was before he died, and seeing his personal copies on the bedside of the room assigned to him convinced him thoroughly that the Outsiders giving him strange looks in the hallway or insistanting that he was here before were the ones in the right.]

I had to pay for it. It's all really expensive, so I picked something that would give me hours upon hours of enjoyment! Since--

[Ah. Right. He should calm down before he goes to far and spoils something. He clears his throat and takes in the sparse interior decoration.] I see you...made it homey. [The futons. The utilitarian cooking set.] I think it's temporary. Everything I own is in storage in Tokyo. Transporting all my supplies is going to be such a hassle. And I have a job there!

[It's retail, but it's a job.]

In the...at the base. You know, when you pay money and they do their science and grab it from home. Same with Doty and my other equipment. [It's amazing how many of LILITH's arsenal can replace Taryon's expensive armor and tools, at times functioning even better.] You should talk with them the next time you're there. I don't think they're any limit as to what they can bring back.

[He stands in the middle of the room, glancing at every corner of the room, unsure where he's supposed to sit. Is this a case where he has to just pick a spot on the floor?]

Well, you've made it better than a bare room. I'd say that's some hard work. It just needs a bit more tender love.

[By that, he means a lot, but he is trying not to hurt the kid's feelings.]

True. We could move back in a matter of months. I've seen those construction sites. These machines make work so much faster than if we had to do it all by hand.

likemybooks: Taryon shading his eyes and smiling (new adventure)
From: [personal profile] likemybooks
[The lessons in etiquette never taught Taryon what to so in the case of a lack of chairs when paying a visit. Thankfully, traveling with an adventuring party taught him that when sitting outdoors, the priority is whatever stone or log you find followed by giving up and sitting on the grass.

Tary drops cross-legged on the floor by the futons and claps his hands ontonhis knees.]
There's nothing wrong with wanting to live in a beautiful home. I spruced it up a bit, added some better furniture, hung up some posters, added some figurines, replaced the curtains...it's the little things that turn it into a home.

[His soft smile comes from remembering the year spent renovating the Third House of Whitestone with Vex โ€” a decently sized manor for the newly title baroness, now a secondary house with rooms permanently reserved for Taryon when he visits. Rather, it's for the version of Taryon that's on Exandrian, but both of them are the same person. The first few months, once the burnt wood was replaced, as dedicated to coordinating the wallpaper and carpets. The best part was shopping for furnishings and decorations to make the space fitting for a lady and her best friend. Watching the building slowly transform into something special the two of them made together.]

I think some pillows would add a bit of color. How about bringing in a vade of flowers? That never fails to delight. [A hypothetical visitor, that is.]

From: [personal profile] likemybooks
Oh. [His eyes dart briefly to the side.] Right.

Well, I also want to decorate my space. It's supposed to be a room, not a prison cell. Besides, if we ever must return to Kyoto for a mission, it's better to have a cozy place waiting for us. I'd rather not have to return to a dreary, concrete room after a long day of searching for the kaiju's lair.

[When he says it like that, Taryon is reminded of how easy books made a knight errant's life. Wandering the land and sleeping in a convenient cave is poetic in writing and not when you're living it in the ruins of Kyoto. But it makes the reality more bearable, if just for a moment.]

I'm just saying, it would make your room really nice for guests. [He says, looking at the futons.]

Some of the older guys. Astarion is the one usually there, since he can't be out in the sunlight. [He tilts his head in the general direction of his room, as if Bakugo can even tell where it's supposed to be.] There's not too much space with all our equipment, but I'm hoping to find something nice to decorate our walls.

Look, just because we might be staying here only for a short time doesn't mean our lodgings should be dingy. Maybe it's different if you grew up poor, but I appreciate effort put into interior decorating.

[Glancing at the furniture.] And you need a decent space to store that book.

My robot and tools. It's how I fight. [He reaches into a pocket and pulls out two coins created from scrap metal and engraved by hand.] And I need things to hold my spells. It takes a lot more space than you'd think.

[It doesn't. Taryon is just used to having a giant room to himself and magic hammer space boxes.]

You know what, you make a good point. I should find an artist among us to paint our walls, and I should learn how to make a bookcase. It could be fun!

[He has to find something positive about this. Learning a new skill will surely bring in the respect and admiration, and maybe he'll get a compliment out of Bakugo.

For now, though:]
I'll come back later once you've gotten through some of the book. I haven't had the chance to talk to anyone else about it, and you seem the type to enjoy it.

Yes! I put spells into coins or roombas and hand them out to anyone to use in their time of greatest need. It can be their armor if they wanted it, or I can build something new. It really doesn't have to take up much space. [He leans closer to Bakugo.] My room isn't full of junk.

[He must insist that he takes good care of his supplies and organizes everything. What kind of nerd would he be if he put everything in spots where they didn't belong?]

Don't worry. I will. I just didn't get the chance to talk to anyone who'd be as into it as I would. [Being really, really thick books.] And these are my only copies. I can't hand them out willy-nilly and hope they return it sooner than later.

I...do...

They're helpful. [And Taryon is quick to bond to robots. Thankfully, Doty isn't jealous of several simple drones who can never replace his role as Taryon's scribe and assistant.] I send them across the battlefield if I'm too far to help.

[A brilliant plan, when such an opportunity arises.]

Thank you. That books means a lot to me. [And from the looks of it, he's succeeded in reaching out to Bakuga when Ereshkigal couldn't. He's now the expert mediator (he is not).]
So! Do you have any more questions to ask me? I'm up to answer anything you have about my work.

They're already good at their jobs. I'm not going to meddle in those affairs. [Once he learns how to build his own electronics, the roombas will not be safe.] I enchanted them to follow my commands. "Go there," or "bring this thing", simple tasks to guide them to the right person. And they have their own personalities, did you know that?

[Which he programmed them to have.]

Arcane magic, if you want to be specific. The type where you study runes and research spells. Some wizards know how to cast them with a book, but I'm more of a hands-on fighter, as you have seen.

[Assuming that he's done something cool before he lost his memory.]

Is there something you wish I make for you?

These aren't any ordinary roombas, I'm telling you. Magic can be used in anything, no matter what's inside in. Actually, it's better if I'm infusing it into something complex made from expensive components. Spells stick to it better.

[It's all very complex and esoteric, but it makes sense to anyone studying magic.]

I've โ€” I have a job. [Rather defensive, considering that he spent most of his free time in his room when he was young.] I go out and talk to people. I'm not some sort of disheveled hermit, you know.

[Unfortunately, Bakugo has not seen any evidence that he is, in fact, a cool adult.]

I'll see what I can do. Do you wear gloves? Gauntlets? I can upgrade that, if you'd like.

I've read about them. They're an explosive that detonates a set time after you activate them and throw them. We have weapons like that, although they're chemical-based.

[Answer: he knows about them in theory.]

Are you...suggesting that I make one? I can't say it will work like the ones of this world, but I could tinker up one based in alchemical principles and some magic. Something infused with an explosions spell? A fireball?

Five?! [He blurts his surprise before he can catch himself.] I mean - sure, I can do such thing. Once we have a laboratory open to us Outsiders, I'll get right do it!

[He gives Bakugo a thumbs up.]

You'll get your weapons.

[Five, though...he can do a basic exploding one, but what other variations can he do when he doens't have access to common magical ingredients. A mystery that he will have to solve himself.]
