[Time's certainly a thing in the life of a hero and student, even moreso when you're both. Bakugou's an excellent cook, but even he's had time crunches and had to grab some bar from the pantry or nuke something in the microwave. It's rare, but happens.

Definitely can relate to the comfort of not leaving your dorm room. He's got a minifridge and single burner in his room for that very reason. Antisocial grenade.

Bakugou orders a tea for himself as well, opting for ice instead of heat. The contrast between it and the soon-to-be hotpot is the intent. The menu has a lot of combination options, ranging from meat platters to vegetable spreads to mixtures of the two with sides of noodles and rice.]

The "ancient" spicy pork. It's a master stock that's been used for over 20 years.

[ Shinsou can't help but laugh at Bakugou's answer. ]

You are such a foodie.

[ There's no heat, just teasing and a genuine sort of affection. Putting down the menu Shinsou just nods. ]

Sounds good, I'll trust your judgement. So long as there's some actual flavor and not just mouth numbing heat, I'm in.

[He's not a foodie! He just has knowledge about shit and pays attention to health and preference and judges the food he eats. Sheesh! (That's called a foodie, idiot.)

The only problem with the table having a burner underneath it for the pot is he can't kick Shinsou in the shin...]

It's not that kind of spicy.

[It's the spice kind of spicy, not heat kind of spicy. Bakugou nods towards the sauces on the far side of the table against the wall.]

There's the hot stuff.

[He ends up ordering a spread platter, with plenty of meat and vegetables alongside a bed of glass noodles, and the stock he talked about.]

You want an appetizer? Spring roll? Egg roll? Green plate? [Think edamame and spinach leaves drizzled in sauce over rice.]

[ You are totally a foodie, Katsuki, and Shinsou think's it's endearing. Get used to it. ]

Got it, as for the appetizer. Spring rolls sound good.

[ Something light and fresh to go with the hearty brother they'd be having. ]

You know, there's nothing wrong with having food as a passion, right? It's cool you know that sort of stuff, better than somethings and hey it's useful.

He's also a great shot with these hot sauce bottles... Just saying.]

Spring rolls.

[To the waitress as she finishes jotting down the rest of the order. With that, she clicks on the burner to start the pot heating up and adds some water for it to get its steam going. Then heads off to gather their drinks and get the order in.]

A passion for something usually turns it into a career. I'm gonna be a hero, not a chef.

I'm just saying, not everything that's a passion has to be a career.

[ Shinsou shrugged, crossing his arms to lean on them as he looked around a bit before looking back at Bakugou. ]

I can get pretty into stuff with coffee but you don't see me looking into being a barista.

[ He may not have a full coffee bar in his dorm room but it's probably not for the lack of trying, let's be honest here. ]

Aa. Right.

[Bakugou's the annoying savant that's good at everything, so he had his pick of whatever career he wanted. But only heroism has held his interest. More like he's determined to be one. He leans back in the booth, sipping at his tea after it arrives.

The place is pretty nice and their booth feels private and comfortably walled off from anyone behind them. Steam drifts up from other tables in sight, the sound of chatter and slop of food in the broth filling the air.]

Shit, are you like Ponytail, but with coffee instead of tea?

[Curious, but with that usual scowl. Though if he's honest, having the aroma of coffee around their place would be more preferable to tea...

A THOUGHT HE DID NOT JUST THINK RIGHT NOW!!]

Heh, no. I've heard how Yaoyorozu can be.

[ It gets a laugh from Shinsou as he shakes his head. If he knew what was going through Katsuiki's head he might tease him, even just a little, but sadly he doesn't. ]

I just know what I like and how to make things. I don't buy the super expensive stuff or anything specially unless I really wanna try it.

[Thank fuck Shinsou can't read minds. Bakugou leans back in his seat and gets a feeling with his legs for where the burner tank is. Of course it's safely enclosed and stuff, but still, doesn't wanna keep kicking it accidentally.]

Coffee can be as expensive as alcohol too. [Not that surprising, all things considered.] Do you just use it to drink or do you put it in other things?

[ While he can't read minds he's gotten good at reading people, lucky for Katsuki he hasn't quite learned the blonde's tells. ]

Not really? I mean I don't really cook, and the most I mix it with is normal coffee sort of things. Milk, sugar, maybe some chocolate milk or something if I have it.

no problem. mine's gonna yoink me later this week.

No shit. She's got a lot that makes her happy, even though she can be a damn worrier.

[Despite her powerful Quirk and rich-girl status, Yaoyorozu has a lot of confidence issues. She's certainly working on them, but... it's her Achilles heel. The things that make her happy help, like tea and studying with her friends and other shit.

Huh?! He has no tells!! He expresses exactly what he wants! Hmph.]

You put chocolate milk in your coffee?

[Cream, sugar, milk, sure, but despite all those fancy coffee drinks, plenty of which have chocolate in them, the idea of chocolate milk ironically catches Bakugou off guard.]

Of all the things people put in coffee that sounds weird? People put milk and chocolate syrup in it...I just skip a step.

[ Shinsou just sort of laughs, shrugging. He's not offended, in fact it's kinda funny to him. ]

You want something weird, I've seen things about people putting orange juice in coffee. Now that's weird.

I've never fucking heard of someone doing that before! Sue me!

[He knows it's not weird, but it still caught him off guard. Even if it's kind of obvious, since people are already putting chocolate and milk in coffee at the same time.

... wonder why chocolate milk isn't advertised as a coffee addition?]

Disgusting. Is that like stirring a raw egg in your milk and drinking it?

[Technically you're halfway to a cake at that point.]

[ Katsuki's reaction just gets a laugh from Shinsou, covering his mouth a bit before shaking his head and making a face at the idea of a raw egg in milk. ]

That's just gross....raw eggs goes over hot rice or noodles, that's it.

[ It's a texture thing for him. ]

[Stop fucking laughing. It's a gross imagery no matter how you think about it.]

Some people eat them right out of the shell.

[Hot rice and noodles cook the egg while it's oozing around in the mixture. So it's not technically "raw" as you get to it.]

[ He might stop laughing, but he still has that amused glint in his eyes. He can't help it, it's fun to see the blonde so riled up. It's even more fun when he can be the one to do it sometimes.

So long as he knows Bakugou isn't actually mad about whatever it is. ]

[His guess. The texture and all. Then again, plenty of people like raw oysters and how much different can those be, getting slurped out of the half shell.

Bakugou picks up his drink for a quick sip.]

At least tea's not as noisy as coffee.

For sure...wait...how is coffee noisier than tea? Do you mean like the machine used?

[ His face scrunches up a bit in confusion before he continues. ]

Because kettles can be really loud too. Plus you can get instant which doesn't make any more noise than making tea.

Grinding beans versus steeping leaves.

[Duh. How is that even a question? Of course, instant coffee is just as quiet. If you don't mind the coffee machine making noise as it pees in your cup... Enjoy that mental image.]

Mom sometimes makes tea in a pot, so it doesn't whistle.

Okay ya got me there.

[ Grabbing his tea Shinsou nods before taking a drink, admitting 'defeat' over the matter. Though he would be glad not to have that mental imagine thank you very much. After putting his cup down he sort of traces his fingers around the rim, idle hands fidgeting as he tries to think of something. Sure he was fine with the silence while they were walking, it was different when they were already seated.

It's not as awkward as it could be though, Katsuki isn't the type to demand silence be filled. Which is nice. ]

[Luckily they don't have to sit in silence long, as the first few plates of food arrive. Glass noodles, thin-sliced beef, leaves of nappa cabbage, and small cubes of potatoes for starters. The server pours the heated broth into the pot centered on their table. Shouldn't take more than a few minutes to bring it to a gentle boil. In the meantime, bowls of rice and ginger salad accompany the first round, as well as refill on tea. Bakugo asks for a hot sauce and glances to Hitoshi to see if he wants anything else before the server heads off.]

[ Shaking his head, Shinsou instead stared down at the pot in front of them, watching it come up to a boil before thanking the server. ]

So what how do you recommend starting? Don't think I've ever had hotpot before...except maybe one time? One of my foster families had it for a birthday or something?

[Bakugou uses the sterilized ladle to stir the stock a few times, waiting for it to come back to that simmering boil in a few seconds. Good, it's hot enough now to do some cooking.]

Start with something that cooks quickly. [He uses his chopsticks to pick up a cabbage leaf and then inserts it (and a few more) into the pot.][Here he uses the chopsticks resting beside the thin slices of raw meat to pick up a slice and then sticks it in the pot.] Keep a hold of it and swish it back and forth in the pot. [Hence the shabu-shabu name (for swish swish) of the dish.] Take it out when it's cooked how you like it.

[With that, Bakugou pulls the meat out, taps the chopsticks on the side of the pot to get the drippings off back into the stock, and then offers the cooked slice to Shinsou.] Here. The longer something's in the pot, the more stock flavor it soaks up.

[It's not like Bakugou's an intelligent guy or anything... Kitchen talent... Nerd.]

[ Perking up, Shinsou held out his rice so that Bakugou could put the meat on top of it before grabbing his chopsticks with a quietly muttered thanks and starting to eat. It was definitely better than he had been expecting, he liked it a lot!! There's a surprised sound that tappers off into a hum, listening to Bakugou as he nods, smirking a bit around his food.

It's amusing to him to see how much the blonde knows about cooking and food. It's a small peak into just how much of a nerd his boyfriend is, more than people really seem to realize.

After the first bite, Shinsou waits his turn until Bakugou has gotten some before he grabs another slice of beef as well as a slice of cabbage. ]

Definitely a good choice, the broth is really good.

damn, i'm jelly. i'm waiting for the complete season bluray, so i'm not gonna see it for years...

[The stock they'd ordered did a great job with the flavor infusion, so even the short dip and cook lent the meat a nice flavor. Bakugou sets the meat chopsticks back on the stand by the plate, they uses his own chopsticks to fish out one of the nappa cabbage leaves for his plate. Leaving it to cool off, he trades chopsticks again and swishes a piece of meat in the stock to cook it.

On top of the entertainment and feeling of "success" cooking your own food, the rhythmic swishing in the broth and the lazy exercise of doing so really helps make everything taste better. It's interactive and chatting while you do something is a little better than chatting while you sit and just wait for your food.

Bakugou's obviously done this before, since he knows when to put the ingredients in staggered to let them all finish to the degree he wants at the same time. The pot's big enough for both of them to cook their food at the same time

... which probably means at some point there's going to be a chopstick war.]

Yeah, I like this flavor. Last time I came here, it was a bit weaker, so they've used it more since then.
