[Luckily they don't have to sit in silence long, as the first few plates of food arrive. Glass noodles, thin-sliced beef, leaves of nappa cabbage, and small cubes of potatoes for starters. The server pours the heated broth into the pot centered on their table. Shouldn't take more than a few minutes to bring it to a gentle boil. In the meantime, bowls of rice and ginger salad accompany the first round, as well as refill on tea. Bakugo asks for a hot sauce and glances to Hitoshi to see if he wants anything else before the server heads off.]

[ Shaking his head, Shinsou instead stared down at the pot in front of them, watching it come up to a boil before thanking the server. ]

So what how do you recommend starting? Don't think I've ever had hotpot before...except maybe one time? One of my foster families had it for a birthday or something?

[Bakugou uses the sterilized ladle to stir the stock a few times, waiting for it to come back to that simmering boil in a few seconds. Good, it's hot enough now to do some cooking.]

Start with something that cooks quickly. [He uses his chopsticks to pick up a cabbage leaf and then inserts it (and a few more) into the pot.][Here he uses the chopsticks resting beside the thin slices of raw meat to pick up a slice and then sticks it in the pot.] Keep a hold of it and swish it back and forth in the pot. [Hence the shabu-shabu name (for swish swish) of the dish.] Take it out when it's cooked how you like it.

[With that, Bakugou pulls the meat out, taps the chopsticks on the side of the pot to get the drippings off back into the stock, and then offers the cooked slice to Shinsou.] Here. The longer something's in the pot, the more stock flavor it soaks up.

[It's not like Bakugou's an intelligent guy or anything... Kitchen talent... Nerd.]

[ Perking up, Shinsou held out his rice so that Bakugou could put the meat on top of it before grabbing his chopsticks with a quietly muttered thanks and starting to eat. It was definitely better than he had been expecting, he liked it a lot!! There's a surprised sound that tappers off into a hum, listening to Bakugou as he nods, smirking a bit around his food.

It's amusing to him to see how much the blonde knows about cooking and food. It's a small peak into just how much of a nerd his boyfriend is, more than people really seem to realize.

After the first bite, Shinsou waits his turn until Bakugou has gotten some before he grabs another slice of beef as well as a slice of cabbage. ]

Definitely a good choice, the broth is really good.

[The stock they'd ordered did a great job with the flavor infusion, so even the short dip and cook lent the meat a nice flavor. Bakugou sets the meat chopsticks back on the stand by the plate, they uses his own chopsticks to fish out one of the nappa cabbage leaves for his plate. Leaving it to cool off, he trades chopsticks again and swishes a piece of meat in the stock to cook it.

On top of the entertainment and feeling of "success" cooking your own food, the rhythmic swishing in the broth and the lazy exercise of doing so really helps make everything taste better. It's interactive and chatting while you do something is a little better than chatting while you sit and just wait for your food.

Bakugou's obviously done this before, since he knows when to put the ingredients in staggered to let them all finish to the degree he wants at the same time. The pot's big enough for both of them to cook their food at the same time

... which probably means at some point there's going to be a chopstick war.]

Yeah, I like this flavor. Last time I came here, it was a bit weaker, so they've used it more since then.

[ Shinsou gets the hang of it pretty quickly and is suddenly having thoughts about convincing Aizawa to bring Eri to a place like this...or maybe just a smaller scale at home would be better. Maybe a weekend he can go back to visit. It's fun and definitely worth the cost so far. Not to mention it tastes really good.

Looking up from his food Shinsou listens with a nod. ]

Are they one of those places that just like...continue using the same brother and add more as it goes down? One of those, flavor builds over time sort of things? That's cool.

[ It's definitely different but he can appreciate the dedication and work that goes into making something that tastes this good, even with the heat to it. Something that surprisingly isn't too much for the violet haired teen. ]

[Bakugou isn't some traveling advertisement, but if he finds a place or thing he likes, there's nothing stopping him from at least mentioning it, or sharing it. Usually just with one or two people he's close to and feels comfortable saying such things around. The idiot has issues admitting he actually likes something. Tough guys can't say they enjoy going to hotpot; they have to slap down the suggestion like putting a damn horse in the race during "where do we eat" conversations.

But Shinsou's someone who gets to see this side of the explosive blonde. Quieter, calmer, some of that knowledgeable nerd showing through his usual front.]

Yeah. It's called a master stock. They try to keep the same type of flavor at least: fish, seafood, poultry, vegetable, instead of boiling everything in anything.

[That'd just make a flavorful mess that would have little distinction between themselves. Hard to market uniqueness when there is none. Bakugou swishes a few pieces of meat and cabbage leaves together in the broth, then pulls out once they're good, hot, and dripping.]

Other places let you grill at the table.

Huh, neat.

[ Nodding Shinsou listened intently and ate his food, watching Katsuki before copying the other when he had a chance to grab some of his own. The heat definitely compacted over time but it was still pretty good, not as bad as he might have been afraid of dealing with something Katsuki wanted. ]

Oh yeah, I've been to a place like that once. It's pretty fun and the meat was really good.

[While Katsuki's not the kind of person to go rambling about something he's knowledgeable about (unlike a certain someone else they both know), he's not above shooting out a knowledgeable answer and being done with it. This one helps the experience... and he shows off for his boyfriend, so fuck off.

Katsuki doesn't coddle Hitoshi's first time, though he doesn't fight him for pot space or ingredients either. Sometimes they swish together in the pot, other times it's one in and one out. They rest of their order comes out before they're done with the first wave, so that definitely helps spice up the variety of what they've got.

Yeah, he avoided getting the bombastic spice, leaving this broth with a mild heat and plenty of flavor. It's more temperature hot than spicy hot.]

Find out the name and we'll go again.

[He's curious to see how well Hitoshi grills.]

[ Shinsou can't help teasing the blonde, it's so easy. Besides it's not like Shinsou was against the idea, if he was he wouldn't have been there for the first date. Or we would have objected more to Katsuki calling him the blonde's boyfriend. It was interesting to know that Bakugou of all people took something like dating so seriously, but then again maybe it was something Shinsou should have expected. They guy was 0-100 about a lot of things so why not this?

He didn't play around with people and it was something that Hitoshi appreciated. ]

Yeah, I'll see if I can get it from Hizashi.

Huh? Of course I am! Unless you're gonna blow this one.

[Tch, what'd he look like, a one and done kind of guy? He wouldn't have even agreed to this if he wasn't interested in Hitoshi long term. Katsuki's not a shallow person despite his abrasive personality. Still, admitting that just now was more or less admitting... he wants a second date.

So yeah. Time to shove some meat in his mouth and find the pot extremely fascinating for a few seconds. Not like he's hot in the face or anything. That's just the steam from the simmering broth. Shut up.

This time, he adds a cabbage leaf, a strip of beef, two potato slices, and after some cooking, takes them out and rolls the the last two into the former for a steaming bite.]

Good. See if they take reservations too.

[Shinsou sighed, scratching at the back of his neck after putting his chopsticks down. ]

Just...don't be surprised if I come off as...I don't know....surprised that you actually want to go out.

[He doesn't talk about it, doesn't really wanna bring the mood down about the fact that relationships rarely end well for him. He's always waiting for the other person to leave him, he doesn't know what to expect and that scares him. It's nice that Bakugou seems interested for now but how long will that last? How long before he gets bored with Hitoshi? Before he gets tired of the guy even?

That being said that doesn't mean he's not gonna use this time while he has Bakugou's interest to the fullest. He will most definitely be asking Hizashi where it was they had gone so he could put in a reservation. He wants to be the one to take the other out this time.

As a way to sort of avoid talking more, Shinsou does much the same as the blonde. Cooking up some meat and enoki before wrapping them in cabbage. Anything to not start talking more than he really needed to be. ]

[Bakugou arches his brow at the sudden interjection. Nothing "good" ever comes from a sigh-carried "Look" like that. He picks up another piece of meat from the grill, then sets it atop a grilled daikon disc before popping it in his mouth. Ah, so that's what Shinsou's worried about...]

How long are you gonna stay surprised?

[It's obvious that Bakugou's not only accepted going out with Shinsou, but also wants to. Enough to go on a second date as well. He's never really been one to think about relationships, considering things like dating or boy/girlfriends distractions from his studies and heroics. Yet here he is, sitting across from a boy he wants to be around in a restaurant having an actual date. No studies or heroics involved.

He can already guess the reason why Shinsou said what he did. Being surprised someone wants to date him. Likely doubtful of people's intentions towards him. Or feelings. It irks him slightly, but considering Shinsou's past and how people always viewed him with wary eyes, said what they thought was "better" for him, the guy's left feeling surprised he's attractive, valued, wanted. Fucking annoying...

Bakugou lays a few more pieces on the grill, understanding Shinsou didn't want to talk about this topic more than necessary. It's not like the blonde likes getting into these "feelings" things either. But at the same time, he's not one to back down from a challenge. Even if that's someone else's self doubts.]

Tch. Doesn't matter. I'll turn that surprise into acceptance. Watch me.

[ The question has Shinsou sort of staring down at his bowl of rice and he can't help the thinking: Probably always.

Because shit like that is hard to overcome and he's sure that by the time he starts to, Bakugou will change his mind. Shinsou's own insecurities will get to be too much and Bakugou won't want them holding him back and he'll leave. It's something that while he hates, Shinsou feels is inevitable so he'll just make the most of the time he does have with the blonde.

But then Bakugou says what he says and Shinsou can't help the grin that pulls at his lips. It's small but it's there and it's genuine. Trust Bakugou to be stubborn. ]

I'll just have to take your word for it.

[ He needs to change the subject...now. ]

[He is stubborn. Stubborn enough to face down Shinsou's doubts one at a time over and over until the damn things finally back off and crawl into the shadows they came from. Perhaps he'll never be able to completely eradicate them.

There are things Bakugou deals with that won't ever go away either. Despite his maturity and growth, he'll always have that fragile pride and inferiority/superiority complex, even if they're both improving. Guilt, stubborn, regrets, he's had to accept he's not perfect. But when Bakugou sets his mind on something, there's extremely few things that can get him to stop.

None of those things are Shinsou's doubts. So he says what he says without a shred of question. It's a demand and Shinsou better sit down and brace for it. Cause that's gonna happen whether he believes it or not.]

We got another hour. [Said after he checks the time real quick.] The theater is ten minutes from here.

[Advertisements and trailers are a thing too, so they have a fair window.]

[ If Shinsou was honest, it's that stubbornness that made Shinsou actually take notice of the guy. Well beyond the loud abrasive assholery that was Katsuki Bakugou's attitude. After seeing him more and seeing how he interacted with others it became clearer to Hitoshi that the blonde was much more than everyone was willing to see.

So he'll take that stubbornness gratefully. ]

Cool.

[ He checks his watch as well before proceeding to stuff more food into his face, glad that the silence that follows doesn't have to be classified as 'awkward'. He's pretty content, even if he's still trying to come to terms with what the blonde had been saying about sticking around and making Shinsou realize that he was what? Desirable? ]

[The same thing is in reverse. Bakugou initially dismissed Shinsou for being a lame butt-hurt idiot like that 1-B asshole, jealous over people with stronger Quirks and better prowess. But seeing the truth at the Sports Festival, both Shinsou's Quirk on full display and his determination to become a hero despite everything he went through, Bakugou was silently impressed. That kind of determination is nothing to scoff at, especially standing up to "life" itself and everyone who ever said "you can't" to him.

Hitoshi is a hero. He saw that even more in the Joint Training. Kind, logical, intelligent, stubborn, competitive, realistic, adaptable, determined. He really came into his own.

And adding that muscle to bulk up didn't hurt him either. Damn. A body on top of his looks.

Bakugou layers up another meat/vegetable combo and pops it in. The restaurant's steady flow of their different ingredients kept the grill cooking and the food in variety. It's why he likes these places; you're not stuck with an awkward silence so much, since there's something to keep you busy and focus on if things simmer down.

Yes, Shinsou. You're desirable.]

[ For now Shinsou would agree to disagree on the idea of being 'desirable' if only because he has way too many hang-ups that he doesn't want to get into. But, it's nice to know that someone is ready to disagree with him on that point. Someone is ready to fight him and his own self-doubts.

The food is an incredibly good distraction, however, it tastes good and smells amazing. Even the spicier stuff that Bakugou grabs smells fantastic. It's easy to get distracted when there's good food and a good looking guy across from him. So he doesn't even worry when he's setting about making himself something of meat wrapped in cooked cabbage with a chili oil.

Definitely good food. He really needed to tell Aizawa about this place. It's after a little while that he finally sits back, chopsticks down and instead just drinks his tea. Way too full to continue. At first he thinks about trying to start some small talk but in the end decides against it in favor of just resting his chin on his hand, watching the blonde instead. ]

[Disagree all he wants. It's not like Bakugou's never had to deal with someone trying to tell him he's wrong about something. And he fucking deals with them. Either shouting them down, or if that doesn't cow them, proving without a doubt why he's fucking right. How he'll go about that with Shinsou is a long-term battle, but "give up" is not in the blonde's toolbox of skills.

Luckily their order wasn't beyond their stomachs and Bakugou ends up being the one to finish the last pieces left in the bowls while Shinsou settles back to sip his tea. He's unwilling to veer too far into the "hurt me" round when it comes to food, but taking things home isn't usually permitted in a grill like this. Bakugou indicates the check as the grill's clicked off and spends the remaining time polishing off his final cooks on the proverbial coals.

No need to start a conversation. They've had heavy enough. He reviews the ticket, judges it correct, pays for the meal with his card, and folds the receipt into his wallet to be processed later against his credit. Then it's gathering their things and getting out of the booth without banging a knee on the setup beneath.] Where'd you learn to cook?

[He noticed Shinsou wasn't bad at handling his food on the grill. Didn't burn things or slop them around the rim. Elements that someone wasn't a novice in the kitchen.]

[ Well we all know that shouting at Shinsou won't do much other than leave him smirking because, honestly, Bakugou doesn't intimidate him as much as he does others. At least not on the surface. He knows that the blonde is like him, striving to prove that he is a hero in his own way. ]

Hm? Oh...I mean I just sort of watched stuff online or on tv and kinda...taught myself?

[ He knows the basics and while he might not be able to make some five star meal, he can fend for himself. Always had until more recently. He knows more than he lets on, but it's not a passion or anything. It can just be fun, even more so when he can impress friends...or he would like to eventually do something like that. He's getting there since the sports festival and more people being more open and understanding with him. ]

[Doesn't stop Bakugou from being as loud as he normally is. Though Shinsou is capable of calming down and diverting the explosive blonde more than others. Boyfriend privileges. So long as he can continue to intimidate villains, Bakugou will have to deal with begrudgingly understanding inside those not!friends of his aren't scared of him. much.]

Guess we can cook in when you spend the night.

[Generally Bakugou likes to handle the food he's making for himself in the kitchen, rarely letting anyone else help or much less cook for him. His own perfectionism and pride get in the way. But judging what Shinsou could do on the grill made him feel far more willing to acknowledge his boyfriend's culinary aptitude, so hence the invite to cook alongside Bakugou when they're together. It's a rare offering he hardly gives anyone else who hasn't proved themselves.

And if it's with Shinsou... he's glad. Spending time with him is a comfort Bakugou doesn't really voice, but enjoys all the same.]

But really, that's one of the things that Shinsou likes about Bakugou. He doesn't show his full hand and he's definitely not openly affectionate with many...if any. ]

[ To be fair, Shinsou would still probably mostly stay out of Bakugou's way. He knows how Mic can get with his spaces and he doubts Bakugou is much better. That being said that isn't to say he wouldn't still be happy to spend time with the other in said kitchen. ]

Shinsou likewise has traits that Bakugou admires. His pride and determination, his growing skill and non-buddy-buddy attitude. His quiet affection despite being passionate about things he likes. They compliment each other well.]

[Bakugou's a prickly guy unless he actively wants someone to be around him. Then the spikes retract because that's what he decided and it's not seen as an invasion. Shinsou's work at the grill earned him that much. He'll be fine. Bakugou can work around someone if he has to. He doesn't think Shinsou's going to trip him up.

Plus more time spent with him, so yeah. Double win.]

[Rawr at the very suggestion! Definitely a landed tease, considering watching All Might documentaries would be their classmate's date suggestion, wouldn't it. Midoriya and his overbearing nerdiness fanboying nature.

... thought it's not like Bakugou doesn't have All Might documentaries recorded and/or lined up on download to watch. No, they'll watch something cool, like an action or a thriller or maybe even a heist film if it's got some bursts of adrenaline. Bakugou likes to get pumped during a movie.]

Urusei. I'm not going to pick out something that I'll get bored with.

[That said, there are other reasons Bakugou would lose concentration on something. Like being seated next to his boyfriend in close proximity. Then again, if it's late, odds are they might just nod off next to each other. He wouldn't entirely mind either way.]
